Paddy Ashdown demands Nissan-style deal for GKN in Yeovil and other key UK businesses

Former Liberal Democrat Leader Paddy Ashdown has called on the Government to draw up plans to support other key businesses across the UK in the same way they have helped Nissan in Sunderland.

He said firms like GKN in Yeovil deserve similar protection from the impact of Brexit in order to protect jobs and investment.

GKN recently sent 230 workers home after they were told they were no longer needed to build specialist parts for Royal Navy helicopters, and there are fears of further job losses if the company if forced to shut its factory altogether.

Lord Ashdown commented:

"It's important the Government has stepped in to support Nissan and protect jobs.

"But if they are willing to step in and support making cars in Sunderland, why won't they do the same for those making helicopters in Yeovil?

"It's crucial that a strategy is put in place immediately to secure jobs across the country and across sectors, including our strategically vital aerospace industry.

"The Business Secretary must make clear his plans to deal with Brexit instead of keeping workers in the dark.

"If the Government has decided to prioritise jobs in some areas above others, then workers and businesses deserve to know."
